Celebrating Music, Creativity, and Mental Health Awareness

đŸŽ¶ It was an absolute pleasure to take part in the inspiring Priory Live Festival in Orpington, held on 7th August 2021, organised by the brilliant Nicky Barclay and his wife Emma.

This vibrant event brought together a powerful mix of live music, community spirit, and mental health awareness, shining a light on the vital connection between music and emotional wellbeing—a topic very close to my heart.

EveryBreath Lung Cancer Support Launch

One of the major highlights of the festival was the launch of EveryBreath Lung Cancer Support, a cause deeply important to the organisers. As a wellbeing advocate, I was honoured to be on stage, not only to present and support the amazing musicians but also to help elevate the visibility of this much-needed initiative.

The Mental Health Impact on Musicians

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the music and entertainment industry have been profound. The loss of live performances, the emotional toll of isolation, and the financial instability have left many musicians struggling with mental health challenges, such as:

For many performers, music isn’t just a job—it’s a lifeline. And when that lifeline is cut, the consequences ripple through every part of their life.

Interviewing Artists About Mental Wellbeing

As The Clarity Coach, I had the opportunity to interview several musicians at the festival and discuss the psychological impact of the last few years. These honest conversations brought to light the mental health struggles in the music industry, especially for emerging and independent artists.

Artists shared how they’ve coped with:

It was a privilege to hold space for these conversations and offer support, tools, and hope for a better, more resilient future for performers.

Music as a Tool for Healing

“Music is food for the soul,” I shared during the event. It connects us, heals us, and gives voice to emotions that words alone cannot express. And yet, behind the powerful music we all enjoy are highly sensitive, creative individuals who often struggle silently with mental health issues.

Many of the world’s most iconic musicians—like Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, and Britney Spears—have faced battles with:

Their stories are a stark reminder of the urgent need for mental health support in the creative industries.

From Performer to Coach: Why I Advocate for Mental Health in the Arts

As an ex-professional ice skater, I understand the pressures that come with performing—on stage, behind the scenes, and during long periods on the road. The adrenaline highs and post-performance lows. The expectation to always show up, no matter what you’re going through inside.

That’s why I now dedicate my work to mental health advocacy, supporting not just the general public, but also musicians, artists, and performers who too often suffer in silence.

I believe in using my voice, platform, and professional experience to break the stigma around mental health and provide emotional wellbeing tools that empower creatives to thrive—on and off stage.

Mental Health Support for Musicians – Why It Matters

There’s never been a more crucial time to prioritise mental wellbeing in the music industry.

As a wellbeing and mindset coach, I help musicians:

Whether you’re an established performer or an aspiring artist, your mental health matters just as much as your talent.

Final Thoughts: Let’s Keep the Conversation Going

Music moves us. It inspires us. And it often helps us heal.

But let’s not forget to support the healers—the artists themselves.

If you’re a creative or know someone struggling with their mental health in the arts, reach out. Let’s talk. Let’s support each other. Let’s remove the shame and show that mental health support is strength, not weakness.
